Rent A Shelf To Sell Your Stuff At Flohpalast

In Munich we discovered this interesting innovative second hand retail concept called Flohpalast. Flohpalast is an idea based on a mixture between the atmosphere of a second hand store and the diversity of a flea market. The shop rents shelves to people who want to make money by selling their old stuff, but don’t have the […]

Picnurbia: An Urban Picnic Landscape

This summer, downtown Vancouver was spiced up by Picnurbia, a big yellow wave that offered Vancouverites a great place for relaxation on the street. Created by design collective Loose Affiliates and endorsed by the City of Vancouver, the temporary landscaping project aims to address the shortage of decent public spots for urbanites to gather, relax and picnic. Picnurbia consists of a 28 meters long and 4 meters wide 'über-picnic-blanket', comprised of an undulating wooden structure covered with yellow artificial lawn. Nine large umbrellas create shadowed spaces for people to rest while five tables offer opportunities for picnics and events.

City Office Dominated By Nature

Research has shown that people in hospital and care homes recover faster in a green enviroment. Even a poster with greenery landscape will work. Office employees will finish their tasks more efficiently and faster as well when offered a open green view. Then why don't we bring some nature into our workspaces?

Amphibious Caravan

If you can’t choose between the caravan or boat to bring along with your car on the next holiday it’s not really a big deal with the Sealander, presented at the Caravan Salon 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany. With this miracle, the camping trip doesn’t end at the shore anymore, it continues on the water. You […]

Outsiders

The Venice art Biennale has become an internationally acclaimed charming and entertaining world as a sort of huge luna park for grown-ups, placed in a matchless scenario. The 2011 edition just left me some good memories of a few amazing works spread between the precious frames of the two main locations: Arsenale and Giardini. One creation that […]

3D-Printed Soundscapes

Interaction and sound designer Andy Huntington has created a series of 3D-printed sculptures that embody the sound of a specific environment. His Cylinder project grew out of a desire to create pretty complex objects which hint at the overwhelming detail present in nature. Working with Drew Allan, Huntington aimed to create algorhythmically generated works which […]

Sex Meters In The Streets Of Bonn

Although prostitution is legal in Germany, prostitutes in general don’t pay taxes because a lot of them don’t speak the language and because their service is not suitable for strict administration. That’s why the German government has installed these pretty innovative ‘sex meters’ in the streets of Bonn, as reported by CNN. Every night sex […]

Mapping The Sky Above

NSKYC is an online project which aims to map the color of the sky above New York City. Why? Because Mike Bodge, the man behind the initiative, wonders how the average color of the New York sky looks like. NSKYC shows a large collection of webcam images of the Manhattan skyline and sky, updated with […]

A Decentralized Hotel In The Norwegian Woods

The Norwegian architects of Jensen & Skodvin have designed a great minimalist hotel in the Norwegian woods. The hotel offers great views and an intimate relation to the rest and peace of the Norwegian landscape. The design of this so-called Juvet Landscape Hotel is well taken care of. It’s clean and it perfectly fits with […]

Subway Platform Supermarket

South Koreans don’t like time-consuming activities and they are always on the run. So how can they make the most of the waiting time at train and metro stations? In the Netherlands we would get some coffee and read a free newspaper to kill time, but in South Korea they have the chance to get some […]

Modular Shelters With Accordeon Walls

In order to create privacy when a lot of people are together in a big room, the designers of Molo have come up with an innovative system to create modular spaces. Flexible walls made out of kraft paper enable people to create their own private rooms with sound-absorbing effects. The kraft paper walls are expandable, […]

Urban Farming In Tokyo

It’s always great to stumble upon little green oases in hardcore urban environments. Like this beautiful modular urban farm located in the middle of Tokyo’s vibrant Roppongi district, which was designed by the architects of ON Design Partners. Their farm consists of different glass box units that make up a great installation, and grows vegetables that […]

Place Pulse: ‘Hot Or Not’ For Cities

Which elements affect people’s perception of urban space? This is what MIT Media Lab and Macro Connections try to find out with the online project Place Pulse. The website, which actually functions like a ‘Hot or Not’ for cities, aims to gain a greater understanding of the collective processes that potentially create the perceptions we have of cities.
