Project Japan: Metabolism Talks…
Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist are the authors of a brilliantly fresh book called Project Japan: Metabolism Talks.... The book not only discusses a fascinating subject (the Metabolist movement in Japan) but also breathes inspiration on every single page. Project Japan is a clever and beautiful book that fits effortlessly in a series of stunning Koolhaas books, like S, M, L, XL, Mutations and Content. The book reads like a reference and is obviously made by someone who has a background in film-making and is an expert in the relation between image and text.

An Electric Plywood House On Wheels
Designer Jay Nelson has created a nice electric camper called The Golden Gate. Measuring 96"x54"x64", The Golden Gate is a little, one-person movable house on wheels that can drive up to ten miles on a charge and goes up to 20 m/ph. The interior consists of a kitchen with sink, stove, cooler, storage cubbies, toilet, a bed and storage below the bed. The cabin's design is great for outside-the-city traveling purposes such as surfing. All of its controls are in the steering wheel. The driver sits cross-legged while operating the vehicle.

Pay phones are a dying breed in the streets of of New York City (and other cities). But is this a problem or an opportunity?

The Temporary City
Recently we received this great book called The Temporary City, written by Peter Bishop and Lesley Williams. The book came with a kind note by Williams that says that “we made extensive use of Pop-Up City in writing the book, so therefore I thought we owed you a copy”. Something to be proud of. :-) The topic of the book is pretty much our cup of tea since it discusses the basic element of this blog — temporary and flexible urban design and architecture.
Smile, You’re In Traffic Jam
Feeling bored during his daily one-hour commutes to his web design day job, Diego Gimenez decided to turn his photographic aspirations into practice. The result is an interesting and atmospheric series of voyeuristic glimpses entitled ‘Highway Portraits’. The collection of 122 photos carefully documents other drivers in traffic jams. As you browse through ‘Highway Portraits’, you’ll […]

Artist Mark Reigelman has designed a great neo-romantic parasite shelter that’s attached to the side of the Hotel des Arts in San Francisco. The project ‘Manifest Destiny!’ is a temporary rustic cabin that occupies one of the last remaining unclaimed […]

Différence Et Répétition
Reading Deleuze is no piece of cake. It is often a long and hard thought process and it doesn’t leave much room for ‘fun’ excursions into popular culture. This is especially so for the recently published first Dutch translation of Deleuze’s famous dissertation: ‘Différence et Répétition’ (or: ‘Difference and Repetition’, in Dutch ‘Verschil en Herhaling’), published by Boom. Since this weblog is more of an urban development magazine, rather than a philosophical journal, and since Deleuze often writes about architectural design, I will not to discuss the contents of the book, but rather the aesthetics of it, or rather, its looks. Judging the book by its cover, so to speak.

Amusement Park Buenos Aires
Film director Fernando Livschitz of Buenos Aires-based Black Sheep Films has created this truly fascinating video called 'Inception Park', in which roller coasters fly through the streets of the Argentinian capital, completely untethered to tracks.
Paint The Village!
Vercorin, a small village in the south of Switzerland, has an interesting marketing strategy to set itself apart from all the other mountain villages in the region. Every year the R&Art organization invites a group of creative people to spice up the place, and the results don’t go unnoticed. In 2010, design agency Lang/Baumann was […]

Great Design For Micro-Living
PSFK recently reported about the highlights of this year’s IDS 12 (Interior Design Show 12) in Toronto, which was all about micro-living. The exhibition featured all kinds of neat ideas to turn small spaces into great living environments. Six different Canadian design firms were each tasked with creating a concept room within a two-story structure built out of shipping containers.
