What To Do With The Chicago Hole?

Take a look at the picture. Somewhere in the future the 2,000 feet high 'Chicago Spire', designed by Santiago Calatrava, should arise at this building site. It will be the tallest building of the United States. However, all you will find there now is just a deep, expensive hole in the ground. Nice!

Urban Games, Part 3

During the last days we have written about the phenomenon of urban gaming, coming with beautiful examples of youngsters chasing each other in the streets of today's world cities. Those urban games are not just games; they certainly make a statement or show a profound fascination towards our social realm and public space. 'Pacmanhattan' already showed how interesting and weird urban games can get when you combine the digital with the physical.

The Battle Of The Urban Space

Who should be responsible for the city's lay-out? The ones who pay for it, or the ones with the creativity and capacity to make it look good? Well, a good argument is shown in two great adbusting projects by Jason Epping and the Graffiti Research Lab.

Urban Games, Part 2

Yesterday we wrote about a two great urban games: 'Capture the Flag' in Toronto and 'Idiotarod', taking place in many American cities. We found out about another one, which is simply fantastic: Pacmanhattan.

Urban Games

After the sudden rise and immediate fall of the flash mob, a more profound phenomenon in urban areas has set its roots: urban gaming.

A Cottage In A Day

Considering the many examples of countryside-like places filled with modular buildings that I've seen so far, it seems that flexible quickbuild architecture is slowly becoming more widely accepted. The funny thing is, 90 percent of those ingenious creatures are simply bargains. For example, have a look at the project 'A Cottage in a Day' I found a nice article about on a blog called 'A Continuous Lean'.

Zenobia: The Flexible Among The Invisible

Reading Italo Calvino's novel The Invisible Cities, I found this great story about Zenobia, a flexible city avant la lettre. Calvino addresses perfectly the issue of a dynamic city growing process.

Public Farming In New York City

New York architecture office WORK has made a temporary Public Farm. The installation in Queens is the winning submission for the PS1 Young Architect Program by MoMA. The public farm challenges a wide-spread concept of our modern society: the idea of the separation of agriculture and urbanism. It tries to reconnect the urban lifestyle to […]

Sexy Temporariness

At this blog we generally aim to tickle you with new developments, designs and practices that are directly or indirectly related to the concept of the pop-up city. However, sometimes it's worth it to write about a project which is more than four years old. This is one of those examples: a temporary bar/restaurant in Rotterdam's Katendrecht district, designed by DUS Architecten.

Are Coffeeshops The New Offices?

Just a great picture from our friends of Je Hoofd Loopt Om, taken in Berlin. The photo illustrates a major development of more and more people getting footloose; a simple laptop is the only equipment they need to do their job. Place doesn't matter, time doesn't matter. An office doesn't have to be an office.

Flexibility In The Middle Of Nowhere

A few days ago I stumbled upon a Wall Street Journal Magazine article about the work of Seattle-based architect Tom Kundig. He designed rustic homes on wheels that engage their landscape, as you can see in the picture. Kundig’s goal is to find balance between the structure and the landscape. I think he did a pretty nice job.

Club 11’s Comeback, Part 2

On the last day of December we wrote about the planned comeback of temporary club, restaurant and event space Club 11 Amsterdam. March, Club 11 opens its doors at a new temporary location: the printing plant in the former building of newspapers Het Parool and Trouw at the Wibautstraat.

The Mobile Apple Juice Machine

If you’re the owner of a fine apple tree, giving you too many apples to eat, you may be interested in hiring a mobile apple juice machine. Well, that's possible. The mobile apple juice machine travels around at the Dutch countryside, available on request for fruit farmers, hobby farmers and individuals with apple trees.

Tag The World, Share Spaces!

Getting both more mobile and widely accepted, Internet devices penetrate deeply into the use of good old space. For example by offering new digital services to the physical environment, like innovative iPhone software like Japanese Sekai Camera does by virtually tagging spaces and places.

A Pop-Up Swimming Pool In France

This picture was shot a couple of years ago, during a holiday at the French west coast close to the old pirate town of Saint Malo (which currently is a tourist town). It shows a temporary swimming pool, to use when the tide is low.
