Towels Create Offline Social Networks In Brazil
Nowadays, social networks are easily being made and expanding through the use of Internet. Whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or WhatsApp, a new friend is just one ‘click’ or message away. Downside is that many of us are struggling to be social towards others in real life, let alone make new friends by talking to someone we don’t know.
A Brazilian collective came up with an idea to change that non-behavior. They invented the ‘Social Towel‘ (or in my best Brazilian: Toalha Social). Behind the Social Towel lies the idea that you don’t need the Internet to make new friends. All you have to do is let others know that you are open to meet new people and talking to someone you don’t know yet.
The Social Towel works really simple: you go to a park or square and take one of the available towels. Make sure you place it on the ground with its print facing skywards, so that people can read the message “Feel free to sit with me”. In this way, the inviting print of the Social Towel allows others to come and sit with you, and offers an opportunity to make new friends. See, you don’t need the Internet to make new friends! Isn’t that great?
