On Mobile Cities, Archigram, Invisible Networks and Ubicomp

I gave an informal presentation on my research to some fabulous engineering/art/technology students this morning. I started out by talking about Archigram’s take on mobile cities, and specifically Peter Cook’s 1963 Plug-in University (a version of the Plug-in City) and Ron Herron’s 1964 Walking City. In stark contrast to the historical and material heaviness of […]

Taco Restaurant On Wheels And Twitter

The taco truck in Los Angeles is getting a whole new spin thanks to both Twitter and the infusion of some Korean spice. Kogi Korean BBQ takes the taste of Korean barbecue and melds it with the Mexican specialities of burritos and tacos. Kogi sells its food primarily through two trucks moving from place to […]

Detroit: The Next Berlin?

NPR recently wrote about an interesting piece of bottom-up urbanism in Detroit. A collective started by Mitch and Gina Cope recruits artists from around the world to move to the Motor City, buy the foreclosed houses and rebuild. The ideamakers hope that the prospect of inexpensive housing will help lure other artists to their Detroit […]

Add Some Color To The Road

Brooklyn-based Studio Gelardi came up with something arty for cyclists to make the streets more colourful. They designed Contrail, a small apparatus that sends a coloured message to the mobile community. Contrail attaches to any bike's seat tube and applies a thin layer of chalk powder in one of several colors to the rear tire. The result is a streak that visually enhances public space.

Loaning is under pressure these days. However, a new bright lending initiative is emerging: Wonga. Wonga is a London-based socially responsible lender doing business a totally other way: it provides simple instant mini loans through the Web.

Flexible Plastic Sleeping Cocoons

Social designers frequently come up with new ideas to make life better for homeless people, like the famous tent project in Paris. The Shelter Cart project is an interesting one, because creators Gregor Timlin and Barry Sheehan focused on nice, user-friendly design. The big advantage is that the plastic sleeping cocoons are easily transportable.

Stuttgart’s Pop-Up Skyscraper

The Lotto Turm is a temporary highrise constructed of stacked shipping containers at the Oesterreichische Platz in Stuttgart, Germany. This flexible skyscraper is meant to be there for five to ten years and will give the surrounding neighbourhood a new colourful impulse.

The Travelling Squash Court

This temporary squash court solves the squash problem, giving cities the opportunity to organise a world tour squash event without investing in expensive accommodations. The flexible hall of glass travels the world and brings the tournaments. The instant stadium has been at the world's most special places and has made squash a world sport at Grand Central Terminal New York, Royal Albert Hall in London, the Boston Symphony Hall and, last but not least, the pyramids of Giza in the Egyptian desert.

New York, The Unfinished City

A friend from France, who is both an artist and an economist, on a visit to New York last year said she loves this place so much because every time she comes here she always finds it new and interesting. Well, couldn’t you say that about any great city? Apparently not...

Confetti Graffiti By Eltono Coriandoli

Who doest still use spray cans these days? Street art is rapidly changing and broadening itself with new forms and usage of other materials. This is a nice example of innovation in street art. Italian artist Eltono Coriandoli came up with a simple but very creative idea for an interactive type of street art. Only […]

Eco-Friendly Eye Candy

Look what we've got here. Greenhouse, the first eco-friendly nightclub of the United States, recently opened its doors in New York City. Antonio Di Oronzo of Bluarch Architecture designed a two-level 6,000 square foot club, lounge and event space entirely built from recycled or recyclable materials. Greenhouse is the first nightclub in the US to receive an official certification by the United States Green Buildings Council for its ecological character.
