In the Swedish city of Malmö, a couple of friends, Nils Petter Löfstedt and Erik Westman, decided to create a quite singular artwork: between January and May of 2009, they built a hidden living room in a cavity under a pier. First they painted walls, then they placed a new, wooden floor, a bench, lights, a window and a door. They spent six months working on it in order to turn the space into a cozy, quiet place to stay. Once finished, ‘The Pier’ was inaugurated with an opening party with music and friends. The living room opened its doors for everyone who needs a place to stay or just want to visit.
All the phases of the project where shown in a photographic exhibition in Stockholm and in a short documentary called The Pier, shot and directed by the same Nils Petter Löfstedt and presented in October 2010 in Malmö. Löfstedt and Erik Westman started their project using a junk space in their hometown as a base, providing the public with an artwork, open and liveable. Is this street art? Well, why not? “The concept of street art is in a constant state of flux. Street art does not ask for permission, it happens.”
Here you will find the complete documentary about the project: part 1, part 2.
