Movement Café Pops Up In South East London
Thanks to these nice people on Twitter, we found out about an amazing pop-up café in Greenwich, South East London. Designed by Studio Myersough and situated on a construction site near the Greenwich DLR station, the Movement Café is an ode to typography and poetry.
Ahead of a large-scale redevelopment of a former Greenwich Industrial site, property development company Cathedral Group asked designer Morag Myerscough to spice up a corner of the area. Myerscough came up with a temporary café and performance space that will occupy part of the site until Christmas.
Myerscough collaborated with author Lemn Sissay to give the Movement Café a strong touch of poetry. Sissay wrote a poem about Greenwhich, ‘Shipping Good’, that was hand-panted onto a series of boards and fixed to the scaffolding which forms the main structure of the café as well as the surrounding walls. Other boards display a geometric pattern by Myerscough. The letters of ‘Shipping Good’ will eventually come back permanently into a future road will cut through the area, that’s being redeveloped into a mixed-use scheme of flats, business units and retail.
