This summer, Amsterdam has its own temporary biker meeting place. At Mediamatic, the temporary exhibition Sur Place pays attention to urban bike culture. In Holland this is rather interesting because biking is in itself not related to a subcultural domain, but rather to a collective manner of transporation. Mediamatic’s temporary biker meeting place is a celebration of the biker’s subculture that gets slowly introduced in Amsterdam, partly thanks to the fixed gear culture among the messenger boys and girls.
Our friends of DUS Architects built a bikers track which enables visitors to take an indoor ride. According to Mediamatic’s co-founder and owner Willem Velthoven, the interesting thing about bike culture is the passion involved of all the bikers. Besides that it has a strong relation with style issues and innovative metropolitan subculture. The exhibition is open during this summer.
