Converting Sweden’s Power Towers: Picnic Platforms In The Sky
Anders Berensson Architects (ABA) have been commissioned by the Kungl Djurgårdens förvaltning (Swedish Royal Court) to investigate the potential of repurposing twelve power towers. The towers are located in the urban national park, Norra Djurgården, in central Stockholm. ABA has proposed transforming one or two of the power towers into sky-high picnic towers.
By re-purposing these unused towers, park visitors would have the opportunity to climb stairs to overlooking platforms, providing a 360 view over Norra Djurgården and the city of Stockholm. The platforms are meant to be used as look outs and potential spots for visitors to have a picnic, providing a great view of the surrounding area.
Originally designed to hold heavy power cables, these towers are architecturally sound. The addition of stairs and platforms will not cause any structural issues. ABA has suggested constructing the stairs and platforms from wood, reducing weight while creating contrast with the old structures, which will be painted yellow.
The towers are designed with kiosks on the lower levels, offering snacks and beverages for picnickers. Lights will also be installed so that visitors can view the city from the observation platforms at night. The towers will have limited operating hours and will likely be used only for the summer season.
The proposals made by ABA are currently conceptual, but installation of the Power Towers is being investigated, along with potential funding avenues. This project offers the opportunity to re-purpose the existing structures, an affordable alternative to tearing them down. The proposed plans offer a unique experience, with the possibility of increasing park traffic from local residents and visitors.
