Cabin Porn: Inspiration For Your Quiet Place Somewhere
The recently published book Cabin Porn was created by Zach Klein to serve as an inspiration document for him and his friends and anyone else on this planet who has a dream to build their own hide-out in the woods.
Cabins and hide-outs seem to be the next big thing on the hipster bucket list, taking into account the recent popularity of this theme. It’s no surprise that the cabin trend started in the American tech community as a reaction to the increasing digitalization of our lifestyles. The Cabin Porn community is the brainchild of Vimeo and DIY co-founder Zach Klein. After one year searching for a piece of land where everything is possible, he and his friends bought 55 acres of land in the middle of a forest in Upstate New York. A few months later Klein, his wife and a dozen of friends headed up to camp on their new land. They spent the night in a simple shed-style cabin with no electricity or plumping, that sat high above a brook.
The efforts of Klein and his friends resulted into a forest community named Beaver Brook, where they experience nature, make architecture, art, food and into a place to enjoy each other’s company. In 2013, the collective came up with the idea of a school which invites people from all over the world to learn building techniques and to make their own home themselves — the Beaver Brook School.
Once Beaver Brook was established, Klein and his friends created the Tumblr blog Cabin Porn, on which photos and stories of inspiring tiny homes and hand-made cabins are shared with the rest of the Internet. The growth of the online collection (to over 12,000 examples) grabbed attention from other cabin builders and a huge and audience of more than 10 million people and 350,000 Tumblr followers. The Cabin Porn book now features a ‘best of’ of 200 selected cabins from the archives, as well as ten special stories and photo collections.
The various stories in Cabin Porn range from a grain silo in Grant City, Missouri which, was converted into a place to settle, to an off-grid bunkhouse from the 17th century that was transformed into reminiscent hostel in Deer Isle, Maine. Through the mix between an inspiration of building your own cabin, the book leaves the reader dreaming about having their own quiet place somewhere peaceful and surrounded by nature.
