Amsterdam Music Venue Opens Netherlands’ Smallest Museum

Located in Amsterdam, music venue and cultural center Paradiso has become quite famous in the nearly 50 years since it first opened. Now, it can add one more function to its resume, as host of the smallest museum in the country (possibly the world).

Paradiso has just opened The Small Museum, as an interesting spin on traditional exhibition spaces. For passersby it would be quite easy to miss, because it is actually located on the façade of the building, in one of the cabinets that previously functioned as a notice board. With the help of a specialty light bulb, and the installation of a step, visitors can take a glance at the exhibited work inside the “museum”.

The first piece of artwork that is being displayed in this tiny space is done by conceptual artists Lernert & Sander, who have recently received a lot of attention for their image of 98 perfect raw-food cubes.  Their new work, done in collaboration with members of the band De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, will be on display at The Small Museum until June 16, 2015.

Can this really be considered a “museum” — we’re not sure. However, the re-fashioning of a street-side cabinet is definitely a clever way to make a piece of artwork publicly accessible, and best of all, “entry” to this small museum is free. In keeping with the venue’s character, Paradiso will use this space to display commissioned works related to music and pop culture.
