Tomás Saraceno’s Inflatable Playground
We’ve always been big fans of ‘bubbletecture’. In the past we’ve written plenty of posts about inflatable buildings, structures and interiors. (A little glimpse from 2009: 1, 2, 3.) ‘On Space Time Foam’, Tomás Saraceno’s newest installation in Milan, is another great addition to the ever-growing Pop-Up City Inflatable Database.
The Argentinian artist and architect created a floating structure composed of three levels of clear film that can be accessed by the public, inspired by the cubical configuration of the HangarBicocca exhibition space. Development of the artwork took months of planning and experimentation with a multidisciplinary team of architects and engineers. It was worth it — the result is an amazing, atmospheric public playground.
Good reason to go to Milan, I think. ‘On Space Time Foam’ will be publicly accessible and viewable from the ground floor until February 3, 2013. Visitors (18+ and in good health) are allowed to experience the installation on the upper floors for a maximum of 15 minutes. ‘On Space Time Foam’ will continue as an important project during Saraceno’s residency at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
