Become One With An Octopus
Máximo Riera, a practitioner in the medical industry who turned artist, combined high tech 3D modeling technology with excellent craftsmanship to create realistic animal chairs. The exclusive pieces of his furniture were shown during the 100% Design show in London last month. The sculptures reached high levels of detail and authentic texture using CNC (computer numerical control), a sculptural technique that is comparable to the previous version of 3D printing. The artist presented the octopus, rhino and walrus first, and soon the beetle, lion and whale will be added to the collection. Sitting an animal chair places the animal and human being in harmony (isn’t that what animal day is all about?).
The philosophy about the designs explained by the artist himself:
“The main reason I chose to create a chair is because it is an everyday object, something taken as common and banal in our lives. Whilst considering the chair’s basic functionality, I also wanted to bring it alive, make it more present and create a stronger link between the spectator, the piece and the surrounding space.”
