Yeah, we’re living in times of increasing interaction between digital and physical worlds. This public space project by Danish designer Sebastian Campion (also known as the owner of Guerrilla Innovation) is a good example of an idea that tends to stimulate thinking about the urban realm and the Internet as two linked entities. Campion created the Urban Cursor project for the occasion of Festival Ingràvid, which took place last September in Figueres, Spain.
Urban Cursor, which is described as a “GPS enabled object designed to facilitate social interaction and play in public space”, consists of one oversized 3D computer cursor that was placed on a square in Figueres. Passers-by were encouraged to move the artwork, play with it, and use it as a bench. The cursor contained a GPS device that transmitted geographic coordinates to a Google Map on a website, thereby documenting the object’s movements in the real world, and “making it possible for participants to see how they collectively helped move the object around”.
