Article for Plan Amsterdam

The City of Amsterdam asked us to write an article for Plan Amsterdam — a magazine on urban development in the Amsterdam metropolitan region. In the article we discuss hyper-flexible lifestyles, compact living, and the importance of local identity in the age of internationalisation.

The Future of the Compact City

Amsterdam is committed to building a compact city through densification. A growing group of urban nomads make do with smaller living spaces, prefer access to high grade urban amenities to home ownership, and look for more fluid forms of community. One of the city’s biggest challenges will be to infuse these new living concepts with a local spirit, to make them accessible to young local people starting on the housing ladder, and to include local landmarks into the plans. Densification of Amsterdam requires not only sound urban development plans, but also a clear strategy for the type of urban life the city wants to facilitate.
