Threatened by the ominous possibility of being swallowed by a giant sinkhole, the Swedish city of Kiruna has begun the process of moving its entire city center three kilometers eastward.
Sweden’s northern most municipality is situated next to a massive iron ore mine which threatens the stability of the land. Back in 2014, we covered the initial stage of the project, when the winning plan for the relocation of Kiruna had been chosen. Now, two years later, the project is well under way and Sweden has just released a short documentary video which explains a bit more about the incredible undertaking.
The video features interviews with local businesses as well as architects, and highlights the unfathomable challenge of relocating the arctic city’s most cherished structures. Take a peak below:
