Nipple Mountain

Nipple Hill
  • Wiltshire-based artist and lighting designer Bruce Munro has transformed a massive hill into a huge illuminated woman’s breast.

The provocative and, to some extent, erotic piece of landscape art was created by adding a ‘nipple’ of light on top of the well-shaped hill in the middle of the British landscape. This way the connotation of the so-called Long Knoll in Kilmington has changed drastically when seeing it from the right perspective. The work ‘Beacon on the Hill’ is part of a campaign by the British organization Cancerkin, that aims to raise awareness for breast cancer. The artist cooperates with the breast cancer charity after a close friend died from the disease.

Munro’s three-meter high temporary installation consists of 2,730 plastic bottles with pink and blue lights inside. The work was already planned to be installed in 2012, but was cancelled due to the weather circumstances. Although the work is really beautiful and highly appreciated, the ‘nipple’ on top of the 228-meter high hill in South-West England will only be there for some days. Soon it will travel to the United States.
