Architects Turn Disused Parking Garages Into Pop-Up Homes
Hackney-based architecture studio Levitt Bernstein has won a housing competition with a proposal to turn disused parking garages in London into flexible homes. The competition, organized by the Building Trust, asked architects and (urban) designers to come up with ideas to tackle the shortages of affordable single-occupancy housing. Levitt Bernstein’s idea suggests instant transformation of empty parking garages in Hackney into houses for homeless people by insertion of pre-fab structures. The structures allow for easy assembling and can be inhabited immediately.

UrbanChatRoom is a new smartphone application developed in Vienna, that aims to blend the real and virtual worlds. Demonstrated for the first time at the Austrian pavilion at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, the app serves as a new, free location-based communication system that brings the good ol’ chat box alive in physical space.

On his blog ilovenoord he collects things and places that make you happy in the upcoming district Amsterdam Noord (North Amsterdam). In two years the online and offline community grew into the biggest bottom-up initiative of Amsterdam. The blog’s heart-shaped logo is seen everywhere in the North. Tomorrow, Luc will talk about the role of new media in making a shift from ‘top-down’ thinking to ‘bottom-up’ thinking when it comes to city-making.
