A city should be considered an ever changing organism instead of something static. Charles Darwin’s famous quote “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change” contains an important principle that also applies to cities.
I recently found out about a project by Seoul-born and Barcelona-based designer Lee Jang Sub which perfectly reflects on the organic structure of a city. His ‘Complexcity’ work focuses on finding a concealed aesthetic by using the pattern formed by the roads of the city which have been growing and evolving randomly through time.
The artist explains:
“I perceive the city’s patterns as living creatures that I recompose to form an urban image.”
As you can see in the two images, the results are stunning. The first image is a Complexcity composition of Paris, the second one involves Rome. The Complexcity collection will be introducing ten famous metropolis which grew to become complex cities.
